A practical guide for active patients

How to Choose a Chiropractor for a Sports Injury

Look for clear answers and a plan built around you.

Choosing care starts with asking how a clinician will understand your injury, explain the options and decide whether their approach fits your needs. A treatment menu or a promise of a quick return to training is not enough.

Look for Experience With Active Patients

Ask about experience with concerns like yours and the demands of your activity. Discuss the clinician’s training and qualifications, and how that experience informs the evaluation. Experience with athletes does not guarantee an outcome or establish a specialty credential.

You should be comfortable asking questions and discussing care with your other health professionals. NCCIH offers guidance on selecting a practitioner.

Ask How the Injury Will Be Evaluated

Expect questions about how symptoms began, changes in activity and what you find difficult. An examination may assess movement, strength and the injured area. Ask what the findings mean, what remains uncertain and whether further assessment is needed.

A useful conversation connects the findings to your daily activities and goals, rather than assuming that every sports complaint needs the same treatment.

Look for a Plan Beyond Passive Treatment

Ask how exercise or rehabilitation may fit into care and how progress will be reviewed. Hands-on care may be considered for selected concerns, but manipulation is not required for every sports injury.

Discuss benefits, risks and alternatives before deciding. An individualized plan can include home guidance, changes to activity or care from another clinician. Explore the rehabilitation guide for more context.

Communication About Return to Activity Matters

Ask what should change before you resume an activity and how progression will be assessed. Do not work through injury pain. Return-to-activity decisions depend on the injury and your response, not a guaranteed calendar date.

Know When Referral or Imaging May Be Appropriate

A clinician should be willing to discuss imaging or referral when findings warrant it. Not every injury can be managed with conservative care alone, and symptoms should not automatically be assumed to be a muscle or joint problem.

Ask how the office coordinates with other clinicians when needed. For a serious injury or a medical emergency, seek appropriate medical care rather than waiting for a routine chiropractic visit. Call 911 in an emergency.

Questions to Ask Before Your First Visit

  • What experience do you have evaluating this type of concern?
  • How will you assess my movement and activity limitations?
  • How will you explain the findings and treatment choices?
  • Where might exercise or rehabilitation fit into the plan?
  • What are the expected benefits, risks and alternatives?
  • How will we assess progress and discuss return to activity?
  • When would you recommend imaging or another clinician?

Understand the Treatment Options

Ask why an option is being suggested for your particular findings. Having a treatment available does not make it suitable for every injury. These guides explain approaches offered through the practice:
